Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

This review is tied to the review of the book with the same name, since the movie is the director’s visual representation of a book considered by many a masterpiece.

If you have not read the book, read it! And read all the series and read it to your children too. This series of books has all the ingredients to make Harry Potter the Tom Sawyer of the 21st century. If you know that Tom Sawyer is a literary icon, you know what I am talking about. If you don’t know it, now you do. (Actually it would do you and your children a lot of good if when buying Harry Potter books you also buy a copy of Tom Sawyer) Anyway, I’m babbling, I should be reviewing the movie. Sorry!

I never believed in reading a book if a movie existed, my thoughts were, “if there is a movie why bother with the book?” Well, from experience, I can tell you that you cannot put a whole book in 2 hours of film. Furthermore, your imagination while reading is better than the capability of a director, actors and film crew.

Having said that, the movie is a must see for all the family. The story is about the life of an 11 year old boy with special powers. He had become an orphan at the age of one and was made to live with his aunt. His life with her was miserable and he wasn’t even told that he had special powers. On his 11th birthday he is unexpectedly requested to attend a Magic School. His evil aunt doesn’t accept, but even she can’t stand in the way of Harry’s powers for too long.

When Harry finally goes to the School, we follow his adventures through a year of surprises and learning, unimaginable for a kid that always thought he wasn’t good at anything.
